Attending DIHAD 2024: Exploring Humanitarian Diplomacy and the Journey to the Future

This year, I had the privilege of attending the DIHAD 2024 (29th April to 1st May) conference, an event dedicated to exploring the intricate realm of humanitarian diplomacy and its profound impact on shaping the future of aid and development efforts worldwide. Hosted under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime-Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, DIHAD stands as a beacon of collaboration and innovation in the humanitarian sector.

As highlighted by H.E. Amb. Gerhard Putman-Cramer, Chief Executive Officer of the DIHAD Sustainable Humanitarian Foundation, humanitarian diplomacy serves as a critical conduit for ensuring that aid is delivered in the best interests of those in need, guided by humanitarian principles, human rights, and international humanitarian law. The conference provided a platform for experts from diverse backgrounds to engage in dialogue, share insights, and foster collaboration towards addressing the increasingly complex challenges facing the global community.

Against the backdrop of escalating crises, including the impacts of climate change, natural disasters, and humanitarian emergencies, the theme of DIHAD 2024, “Humanitarian Diplomacy and a Journey to the Future,” resonated deeply. Sessions delved into key areas such as access and human security, climate change, migration, global health, and the evolving role of new actors in humanitarian efforts.

One of the most compelling aspects of the conference was the exploration of how humanitarian diplomacy has evolved over the past two decades, and its potential to drive meaningful change in the years to come. From facilitating access to humanitarian assistance in conflict zones to forging strategic partnerships for sustainable development, humanitarian diplomacy continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of aid interventions worldwide.

As we navigate through an era of unprecedented challenges and uncertainties, DIHAD 2024 reaffirmed the importance of collective action, collaboration, and innovative approaches in addressing humanitarian crises. By harnessing the power of humanitarian diplomacy, we can pave the way for a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for all.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have participated in DIHAD 2024 and look forward to applying the insights gained towards advancing humanitarian efforts and contributing to positive change on a global scale.
