The Conflict in West and Central Africa: A Humanitarian Crisis

ccording to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), the conflict in West and Central Africa is one of the most complex challenges in the world. In 2023, over 64.5 million people required assistance and protection, and over 75 million people (15% of the region’s total population) experienced severe food insecurity, the highest in the last eight years.

The conflict has been ongoing for years, with countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Western Niger being particularly affected. As of December 18, 2023, nearly 260 humanitarian organizations continue to provide assistance to vulnerable people in the region. To date, USD 739 million have been received, reaching at least 34% of the people targeted with lifesaving assistance.

The casualty numbers are staggering, with many people losing their lives or being forced to flee their homes. Unfortunately, the exact number of casualties is difficult to determine due to the ongoing conflict. However, it is clear that more needs to be done to help sort the conflict and provide aid to those affected.
